I have to admit it took while to warm up to Netflix. The idea seemed kinda cheesy to get DVDs by mail to me… but I can’t put my finger on why. When I eventually broke down and got my own Netflix piece of the pie, I was so into it that I was fiendishly working the system to maximize the number of DVDs I could watch for my $7.99 account. Well the doors have been blown off even further now that my PS3 streams Netflix!
Yes, I can stream in HD (and it works darn well) not ALL the movies they’ve got (YET) but a goodly amount and it works really really well. I have not-so-perfect DSL and a wonky router yet somehow an HD Netflix movie streams seamlessly via the Sony PS3 and I am happy. It wasn’t so bad for the last few months that I had to use a dummy Netflix DVD to get the PS3 to stream Netflix movies (shrug) but now I don’t even have to get up and do that as with software magic- Netflix and the fine makers of the PS3 have created a patch which no longer requires me to get up from my couch!
So you may not have a PS3, you may have an XBOX, a Roku, a Wii which should all do this do with Netflix for you as well. I’m still keeping my eye on
Apple TV though now that I’m watching movies on the PS3… I’m not really sure if I need the new Apple TV DESPITE it’s low low low price point. Apple wants us to stream movies (purchased or rented), music, pictures and so on to our TVs… but yet most of us use laptops or desktops and seemed to have successfully compartmentalized our new media experiences to the device and location of that device… but Apple really wants us on the couch for some reason (iPad, Apple TV).
Back to Netflix though, I figure the DVD and Blu-Ray’s days are numbered in FRACTIONS since this process of streaming HD movies seems to work really well. Enjoy!
