SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD presents a veritable feast for New Media people: a feature film well edited with extensive compositing (as done with After Effects) as a storytelling device, a fully functional website offering everything New Media has to offer (more below), video games (for Xbox, PS3, iPhone and iPad) and a band creating 8-bit music soundtracks from a hacked NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) from 1985.
The film is a live-action version of the Oni Press manga (Japanese style comic book) of the same name created by Bryan Lee O’Malley in 2005 and stars Michael Cera in the title role. The film preserves the comic book storytelling devices such as box captions and even 8-bit game score devices which were composited in artfully.
The website for the feature film is built with Flash and features so much NEW MEDIA candy- you need to just go there and explore it yourself http://www.scottpilgrimthemovie.com. Highlights of the site I’d like to make sure you don’t miss though would include social media links of course, create your own avatar, links to remix your own video on YouTube and most importantly- “Socialrama” which hammers home the point that it’s not enough to just put out a film as is these day rather it’s about building a COMMUNITY around the content.
Lastly the music. The Nigel Godrich music for the film harkens back to 80s-90s game soundtracks; back then game soundtracks were created in 8-bit and played over games for Atari, Nintendo and so on. The band Anamanaguchi supplied all of the music for the accompanying video game and their musical website is a Flash explosion not to be missed…
Techburrito.com went on a mission to Comic-Con in San Diego to find something comic book-ie, tech-ish and just plain fun. Behold- Disney Toy Design Director, P.J. Paeleo, shows us the latest TRON LEGACY toy collection: The “Impulse Projection” action figures (which have freaky holographic faces and speak).
