Facebook vs Privacy

by TechBurrito.com Executive Editor, Alan Natale

Everyone’s yapping about privacy issues on Facebook and it’s starting to annoy me- and what’s this with the British all over the interwebs (see/listen to above video). Okay, who am I kidding- I am a BIG sucker for a British accent. They sound so smart! Just listen to how the Dude say PREV- ah- C. Sweet.

Facebook vs Privacy- what the hell do you expect- it’s a FREE service and it’s THEIR service so they can pretty much run the show however they want. If you turn over your pictures and drunk texts and tweets to Facebook then turn around and scream foul about privacy just know that you DO have a choice to go simply through the two-thousand privacy control check boxes (sarcasm) or simply delete your account.

Look, I feel you. When I first got on Facebook I selected (with one check box) total privacy. Nobody could search me, see me or whatever unless I befriended YOU. Then, over time, I started getting friend requests which meant I was no longer what I called “In Stealth Mode” on Facebook. Turns out they were surprise-lowering the privacy on everyone including those of us who’d elected to be totally invisible. Arrrrggh- but here’s the deal, literally, you pay NOTHING to them, you decide to be there and if you put yourself on there then (shrug) take what you get.

My favorite surprise-action by Facebook was when they decided to turn over all my Interests and School Info out into the interwebs and try to connect it to what it thought were relative groups and websites. You’re welcome they said. Thanks for the FAVOR facebook, I’m sure you think you’re doing good- but, frankly, if I wanted to find all that stuff- I would on my own. I’m aware that there’s this thing called search and they have it on Google and you even have it on Facebook.

For practical advice I suppose I’ll just direct you to Cashmore on Mashable since he spelled out five basic things to do to work out your privacy on Facebook. Hey I think that dude is British too. But I digress. Where was I?

So I dug deep for every privacy setting I could find and enabled its brains out… and yet I’m still searchable on Facebook by my name. Joy, I’m still getting friend requests from people I’ve lost touch with since High School; mind you I’ve lost touch with them FOR GOOD REASON… yet, thanks to MY CHOICE to remain on Facebook, I will be found by people who I consider dead-to-me but hey, I’m not paying a thin dime so there you have it.
